Top Tech & Apps for Active Aging Seniors
Now, I know what you’re thinking. “Tech? Me? Give me a break!” But stick with me here. This isn’t about coding, social media, or building rockets. It’s about making your life easier, safer, and more fun. Trust me, I was as skeptical as you are until I gave it a shot. Turns out, this tech stuff isn’t so bad after all.
Staying Connected
Let’s face it, as we get older, it can be harder to get together with friends and family as often as we’d like. That’s where technology comes in. It’s a great way to stay connected with the people you love, no matter how far away they are.

Communication Tech
One of the best ways to keep in touch is through video calls. I used to dread those family gatherings where half the people were on their phones, but now I realize they were probably just communicating with their friends! There are apps for our phones and even devices that can help us stay in touch.
Platforms like FaceTime and Google Meet have made it easier for us to see and talk to loved ones, no matter where we are.
FaceTime is an app specifically for iPhones, whereas Google Meet can be downloaded and used on any device, such as cell phones, tablets, and computers like your laptop.
If you’re not quite ready for video, there are always phone calls. But let’s be honest, sometimes you want to share more than just your voice. That’s where apps like WhatsApp come in. Not only is it compatible with all devices, you can send pictures, videos, and even voice messages. It’s like having a little piece of your loved ones in your pocket.
And let’s not forget about social media. I know, I know. It sounds like something for the grandkids. But hear me out. Platforms like Facebook and Instagram can be a great way to stay in touch with friends and family, share photos, and even join groups with similar interests, and both can be used on your phone, tablet, and even your computer.
But what if you don’t want to deal with the hassle of apps? That’s where smart displays come in. Devices like the Amazon Echo Show and Google Nest Hub can make video calls, play music, and even control your smart home. It’s like having a personal assistant right there in your living room. Staying connected is important for your mental and emotional health. So, give these tech tools a try. You might be surprised at how much you enjoy them.

Health and Wellness: Taking Care of Yourself
As we age, taking care of our health becomes even more important. Thankfully, there are plenty of tech tools out there to help us stay on top of our wellbeing.
Fitness Apps
One of the easiest ways to stay active is with fitness apps. There are apps for everything from walking to yoga. I personally like SilverSneakers. It’s designed specifically for seniors and it’s available at no cost for anyone over 65 through Medicare plans. Silver Sneakers offers live, online classes and workshops, on-demand video workouts through their library, and even in-person locations if you would like to get out.
Heart Health Apps
If you’re worried about your heart health, consider getting a smartwatch. Many smartwatches such as Apple Watch and Samsung’s Galaxy Watch can track your heart rate, blood pressure, and even your sleep patterns. This information can be helpful in managing your health and talking to your doctor.
Medication Management

And let’s not forget about medication management. There are apps that can help you keep track of your prescriptions, set reminders, and even refill your medications automatically. This can be a lifesaver if you’re taking multiple medications.

Mango Health: This app is an all-in-one medicine manager that takes care of your daily health routine, to make it fun, easy, and rewarding. It reminds you to take your medications, gives refill alters, and gives daily points and rewards for motivation!

Dose Cast: This app is not only compatible with Apple and Android phones, but can be used with Amazon devices as well. In order to get the most out of the app, sign up for the paid version. It is only $2.99 per month. You can set notifications for all of your medications that will keep track of all of the prescriptions, the correct dosages, and keep track of refills. One of the most unique features of the app is that it allows you the ability to connect directly to your doctor and your pharmacy. This gives you direct contact when needing assistance for things such as prescription questions and refills.
Telehealth
Let’s face it, the majority of us do not believe we need to go to the doctor unless we have a limb falling off. However, as frustrating as I think it is to spend time at the doctor’s office because I am running a fever, I also know that I have insurance and it really is not a big deal for me to go. But, since 2020, more Telehealth options are available and I don’t need to run to the doctor for everything. It’s a good alternative to get the care that I need without leaving my house. Some of the best options are below.

Medicare: For those with Medicare, Doctor on Demand is considered one of the best. This service allows you to connect face to face with a doctor, through your phone, tablet, and even your computer. It offers urgent care services such as treatments and visits for common conditions and online mental health services.

Medicaid: Teledoc health is a great option for those with Medicaid. You can have access to board-certified doctors and medical experts such as general medicine, mental health physicians, etc.

Taking care of yourself is important at any age, but it’s especially important as we get older. Always be sure to check with your insurance to make sure they cover care with the telehealth provider of your choice.
Safety and Security: Peace of Mind
Feeling safe and secure in your own home is essential for peace of mind. Thankfully, there are plenty of tech and gadgets to help you feel safer.
One option is Medical Alert, a medical alert system. This type of alert helps you get the assistance you need with just a press of a button. These systems allow you to call for help with the push of a button. It’s especially helpful if you live alone or have mobility issues.
Another great option is a home security system such as ADT, SimpliSafe, or Vivint. There are systems that include everything from cameras to smart locks. These types of systems can give you peace of mind knowing that you and your home are protected.
Independent Living: Making Life Easier
Technology has been around for long enough that we can all use a few devices to make our lives easier and help us maintain that independence that we want. Smart home devices are a great way to automate your home. You can control lights, thermostats, and even locks with your voice or a smartphone app. This can make it easier to get around your home, especially if you have limited mobility, hearing, or vision.
If you’re still driving, navigation apps like Waze can be a lifesaver. They can help you find your way around, avoid traffic, and even find the nearest gas station or restaurant.
Maintaining your independence is important as you age. These tech tools can help you stay in control of your life and enjoy your golden years.
So, there you have it. A quick guide to the world of tech for those of us that are getting on up there in years. I know it might seem overwhelming at first, but trust me, a lot of these apps and devices are helping me every day and can help you, too. Remember, you don’t have to adopt every single gadget and app out there. Start small and find what works best for you. And don’t be afraid to ask for help. One of the many reasons we have kids, right?
